Dean Schweinler is a recent graduate from Muhlenberg College where he studied Media and Communications as well as Art.

He went to Muhlenberg to play football for one of the best Division III programs in the country; however, suffered a major concussion before having the chance to take the field for the Mules, ending his football career.

Determined to find a new passion, Dean enrolled in multiple art classes his first semester of college where his drawing teacher saw potential in his drawings, encouraging him to draw everyday. His artwork continued to evolve throughout the semester. Throughout college he enrolled in multiple drawing classes Muhlenberg had to offer. After taking Art History courses, Dean became enamored with the works of artists such as Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Jackson Pollock, Kandinsky, and Van Gogh. Due to his admiration for these artists, Dean decided to enroll in his first painting class during the last semester of his senior year. This painting class focused on realism, but Dean took more of an abstract approach to his assignments. He believes abstract art can evoke feelings, memories, and interpretation on a higher level than realism.

Dean examines colors ahead of painting yet does not plan what he will paint. He relies on his instincts to make quick decisions about which colors excite, interest before applying them to the canvas believing that he can make quick decisions about the placement of color, allowing him to add depth in his paintings. He believes color influences emotion and interpretation from viewers. The interpretations depend on the individual viewing the artwork. Dean believes it is important for the viewer to see what they want in his paintings. “The feelings my paintings evoke might differ from person to person. The purpose of art is to make the viewer feel something. When my work impacts a viewer, it makes my hard work satisfying.”

Dean began painting each day when the COVID outbreak began and has completed over 80 paintings. All of the artwork on this website was completed after March 21st, 2020.
